Know well your accessories
Needle felting requires a ‘Felting mat’ which is usually made of sponge or foam. It acts as a base for performing your needle felting. It also prevents your table and laps from needle hitting. A ball of wool, free of tangles and easy to poke, is essential for needle felting beginners. Corriedale wool is suggested for beginners as it is easy to knit. Select your needle based on the shape and gauge. Triangle-shaped needles are most preferred for beginners. Spiral shaped needles are used for experts to create finer pieces. A needle felting pen is also essential to smooth and fill out the bumps. It also speeds up the process. An Awl and glue are required to make holes and attaching small details to your bigger piece.
Use finger mask
Needle felting is a long process. Poking needles to the wool might sometimes hurt your fingers. It is good if you buy a finger mask to protect your beautiful nails and fingers.
Rub the wool to tangle the fibres before initiating the poking process. While creating a bigger piece, start poking a ball of small wool and add wool layers gradually. While adding wool layers, make a thin layer and put the felted wool inside it. This will save youenergy.
Poke, poke and poke
Before poking, one should know that needles are fragile and should be poked straight up and down. Do not try to bend it, else it will put pressure and the needle will break. Poking is a slow, and it should be done with utmost care. It takes 20-30 minutes to make a small piece and hours to make a big complicated piece.
When you start the needle felting process, the fibre will be loose and fluffy. However, more you poke the needle, it will tangle the fibres. This will create crosslinks which compress the wool. If you feel there are some dents, add another wool layer and poke again. Poking should be done uniform. When wool starts ripping, it means it has started tangling. When the wool getting dense, poke slowly and avoid forcing your needle.
Adding small details to your big creation
While making small details like an ear, eye etc, for an animal, you can leave one end fluffy to attach it to the main piece. When attaching, make indentation repeatedly on the same place in the main body using scissors or felting needle. A beginner interested in needle felting can create any piece but as a starter, you should start with 3 inches diameter of a simple piece like a triangle, heart etc. and use a cast of shape to create your wonderful creation. That day is not far that you will create three-dimensional pieces and earn a handsome income.
